Our History

Welcome to Dawson’s Hotel, a place where history, resilience, and local legend come together in the heart of Reefton.
The Story of Dawson’s Hotel

A Reefton Landmark Since 1872

Dawson’s Hotel has been part of Reefton’s story since the gold rush era, welcoming travellers to the heart of town for more than 150 years. What began as a small West Coast hotel quickly became a local landmark known for hospitality, resilience, and community spirit.

From early beginnings in the 1870s to rebuilding after fire and change, Dawson’s has remained a constant in Reefton — evolving with the town while preserving the character and warmth that define it today.

Over the years, Dawson’s
Hotel has seen its fair share of drama

Legal battles including a breach of contract case that reached the Supreme Court.

Scandals like Dawson’s stormy marriage and high-profile divorce case.

Historic events hosting juries, fire brigade drills, and even the arrival of electric lights in Reefton, when the hotel’s bar was lit up for a dazzled crowd in 1886.

Royal visits including a stay by the Prince of Wales in the 1920s, for whom Reefton’s very first flushing toilet was installed upstairs!

Dawson's Hotel

A Name Woven Into Reefton’s Story

Though the hotel briefly operated under other names, including Gilmer’s Melbourne Hotel and later The New Masonic Hotel (1956–1983), the Dawson’s Hotel name always returned. A testament to its enduring place in the town’s heart.

Even today, Dawson’s stands on its original site. A place of stories, community, and history.

From fires and floods to royalty and revelry, Dawson’s Hotel remains a living reminder of Reefton’s past… and a warm welcome for those who want to be part of its future.
